Overview
The Center for Good Food Purchasing is seeking a UX/UI designer to collaborate in creating a new web-based policy decision support tool. The designer will map how users employ the tool to achieve their objectives, and will develop a visual and interaction design that achieves these functional requirements. Our goal is an effective, elegant “go to” resource for users.
Project objectives
We are creating a public-facing, interactive tool to support public policy and advocacy efforts. It will enable policymakers, advocacy organizations, and communities to visualize and demonstrate the impacts of shifting to value-based food procurement, which can be used as an evidence base to support adoption of good food policies. It will also provide strategies and best practices to support good food purchasing on a practical level.
Features include:
- A scenario planner that projects the benefits of food purchasing shifts to local economies and worker wages, environmental sustainability, and community health and nutrition
- Regional spotlights that display current food purchasing trends and estimates of overall impact
- A resource library for public policymakers (e.g., sample policy language) and public institutions purchasing food (e.g., case studies)
The Center is partnering with the Institute for People, Place, and Possibility (IP3) and Seabourne Consulting to develop the tool and site.
Key responsibilities
The UI/UX designer will collaborate with the Seabourne development team to ensure that users have a crisp interaction with an elegant site that supports the Center’s branding and objectives. The designer will:
- Actively participate in discovery and design sessions with end users
- Refine user personas and synthesize themes from design sessions
- Ensure creation of end to end wireframes, and prepare and present wireframes and rough drafts to the Center and key stakeholders
- Participate in designing graphic user interface elements and navigation
- Integrate Center’s style guides (visual and writing) into the site for a consistent branding, and create new style guides as needed
- Test for intuitivity and experience, identifying and troubleshooting UX/UI problems
- Participate as needed in iterative feedback cycles with end users, and conduct layout adjustments based on feedback
Requirements
- Experience in UX/UI, including a design portfolio
- Excellent communication skills to present to and collaborate with diverse stakeholders
- Client and user-centered mindset with an emphasis on storytelling to bring projected impacts to life for the user
