The Position

Smallhold is looking for an entrepreneurial, energetic, independent, and intrinsically-motivated VP of Finance to help scale the company, quantify and understand opportunities, and define strategy. The VP of Finance will own Finance, while being a meaningful contributor to all things HR, Legal, and Business Operations. This person will be a member of the leadership team and contribute to critical decisions, while owning financial operations and ensuring the company is ready to scale. This role has broad ownership and is the perfect stepping stone to a CFO position.

The Challenge

In this role, you will have these responsibilities:

  • Own and iterate on the five-year financial model, with input from the leadership team, to guide strategic decisions company-wide

  • Be an important advocate for of using data to improve decisions; promote reporting, distribution of data, and analysis of financial metrics across the organization

  • Design, modify and implement all financial processes of the company

  • Lead communication to the Board of Directors and Investors regarding the company’s financial performance and operations

  • Partner with leadership on fundraising strategy and capital deployment.  

  • Work with CEO on deal process for fundraising – will be hands on with fundraising process as we scale

  • Guide the budgeting and forecasting process at all levels, leading to predictability and consistency in projections. Develop cadence for monthly and annual financial reporting to key stakeholders

  • Collaborate with business teams across the organization, including Operations, Marketing, Engineering, Finance, Sales, etc. on a variety of strategic projects

  • Build standard financial statements, including balance sheet, P&L, and statement of cash flows, including preparation for board meetings

  • Oversee the company’s accounting function, monthly budget and actual variance analysis.

  • Oversee and assist in tax filings and compliance documentation

  • Partner with legal on the capitalization table

  • Be a trusted advisor to the CEO and other executives; be a source of advice and counsel as the executive team makes both big and small decisions. 

The Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience as a VP of Finance, preferably the first hire for that function within an early-stage org.

  • Owned the financial/operating model in a prior role, including tracking and reporting KPIs

  • Comfort owning FP&A to internal and external stakeholders

  • Experience with different types of fundraising, including equity, venture debt, equipment financing

  • Eagerness to develop and implement good processes across the organization

  • Comfort working in a dynamic environment with a variety of skill levels and personalities.

  • Knowledge of corporate finance and accounting theory, principles and practices to include GAAP, and Stock-Based Compensation, and benefits planning

Experience with any of the following should be highlighted in the cover letter:

  • Financial modeling ownership; building a bottom-up model.

  • Experience understanding and supporting a fundraise

  • Experience implementing and owning processes in an early-stage company

  • Working entrepreneurially in an unstructured environment
