Who we are looking for:

Bio-Logical Capital seeks an experienced Director of Operations who is skilled in organizational design and management, a creative thinker and collaborator, entrepreneurial, personable, and hands-on. In this role you will lead the continued implementation and growth of our organization and help guide the development of our future projects, team, and impact. You are a mentor to, and manager of our team each day, reviewing and shaping our operational priorities and directing the team’s focus and attention to stay well aligned with our business activities. Alongside the other Directors and Officers, you are a member of our leadership team, working together, thinking creatively to shape the strategic direction of the company’s growth, vision and values, and the continual evolution of our team culture. This position is based at our Denver office, with 5-7 days of travel per month to project sites around the country.

We seek qualified candidates who identify with the descriptions below, with experiences and skills that will nourish our team and culture, and contribute to our growing impact –

  • Inspired by the work we do with an eagerness to contribute to our continued growth and evolution.
  • Committed to making tangible, positive impact on our communities, food systems, equity, & climate.
  • Driven and joyful in taking concepts from idea to execution; jumping between strategic and tactical, between working in the weeds with hands literally in soil, big picture strategy, and managing administrative processes.
  • Comfortable participating in creative discourse with the senior leadership team through listening, building rapport, challenging, and influencing how success is defined and how to pursue it.
  • Entrepreneurial experience in a business or non-profit leadership role, with comfort navigating the uncertainty and ambiguity of building something new.
  • Collaborator & Mentor – Energized by teaching, coaching, and collaborating.
  • Relationship Builder with energy and empathy to build genuine connections within our team as well as with external stakeholders.
  • Financial Literacy – Expertise reading Profit and Loss Statements, and creating financial dashboards to take actions, pivot, and change operational decisions.
  • Systems Designer with proven operations expertise in one or several of the areas that we focus on (food and farm businesses, conservation, hospitality, and urban land use).

In this position you will be expected to:

  • Lead the design and implementation of improved administrative processes to create better systems efficiency, and manage the team’s ongoing engagement with these systems.
  • Influence leadership in where, how, and why to work with specific stakeholders, partners, and clients, creating business development efforts that yield long term relationships in our work.

Team Building and Collaboration

  • Manage team growth through thoughtful recruiting, hiring and onboarding.
  • In collaboration with the leadership team, continue to develop the team’s organizational design and reporting structure, to enable continued growth towards a larger and more diverse team.
  • Lead the ongoing performance evaluation process, and participate and provide input in the individual’s annual review process and goal setting.
  • Manage and mentor individual team members throughout the year. Provide feedback and coaching towards their annual review and goals.
  • Foster an inclusive environment for all team members to learn, grow, and challenge each other.

Strategic Thought Partnership

  • Collaborate with the Leadership Team in creative and strategic thinking around the evolution of our team and company.

Why You Should Work With Us

We come from different areas of working in food supply chains, ecology, business, conservation, agriculture, landscape design, and community development. We believe that restoring human to land connection is integral to creating a healthy, equitable human society. We value curiosity, empathy, honesty, and humility. We are good at difficult conversations, and we frequently debate the tension and balance between profit and impact in our work. We turn down work that we do not believe in. We make mistakes and we believe that these experiences are an essential part of our process, our learning, and our successes. As we grow and evolve, we continue to invest in creating an inclusive and anti-racist workspace for ourselves, our colleagues, and our partners. We love the natural world, as it connects us to the work that we do. Whether we are sitting in a park or working at one of our field projects (helping with weeding, taking soil samples, or participating in animal chores), we are often our best selves are when we are outside.

We believe that healthy soils, sustainable food systems and the people who work within them are the capital of our planet's future. Hence our name. We believe that one of the biggest ways that we can mitigate climate change and create healthy communities is through working in our food systems. Hence our work.

We support, collaborate, and work with stakeholders who share and sometimes challenge these values. We partner with landowners, investors, farmers, conservationists, food professionals, and municipalities to develop creative business solutions to complex problems. We work across many scales and landscapes, from a few city planters to ranches, farms, and conserved areas that span thousands of acres.

Our current long-term projects include a 3,600 acre cattle and silvopasture ranch in Hawaii, a 400-acre diversified farm in Vermont, and a growing urban landscaping business in Colorado. In addition, we consult on family land succession plans, analyze and manage food and agricultural investments; conduct large-scale ecological research studies; and develop and operate food businesses and critical infrastructure along the value chain. Although food and agriculture are often at the forefront of our projects, we also work in water stewardship, healthy human communities, ecological restoration, and landscape conservation.
