Summary:

A growing, mission-driven biotech startup is seeking a Controller to lead the administrative and financial responsibilities of the business. We derive organic chemicals and ingredients from food waste, and have a complex business model with multiple revenue streams and customers. This role will assist the CEO in streamlining business activities spanning across such duties as, financial modeling and reporting, bookkeeping, tax compliance, payroll, AR/AP, and fundraising support.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Compliance/Legal

– Coordinate requirements for business permits, licenses, taxes, and other legal and regulatory aspects of the business
– Manage local, state, and federal government reporting obligations and tax filings
– Maintain an orderly and effective document filing system

HR

– Maintain HR platforms and accounts (payroll, 401k, health benefits, workers comp insurance, etc.
– Ensure payroll is processed in a timely manner and all insurance benefits are up to date

Accounting

– Manage and monitor all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements
– Maintain documented system of accounting policies and operations
– Oversee payments of all accounts; ensuring all accounts are paid on time
– Ensure that accounts receivable are collected promptly
– Monitor cash and funding balances
– Keep an organized filing system of all accounts, statements, transactions, payments, and debts
– Develop and enforce internal controls to maximize protection of company assets, policies, procedures, and workflow

Financial

– Participate in the development of and support the company’s strategic plans
– Advise on financial analyses and decision-making regarding capital investments, pricing, contract negotiations, significant costs, benchmarks,
– Monitor the financial performance of the company
– Compile and analyze financial reporting packages
– Prepare monthly and annual operating budgets
– Develop and manage financial controls in accordance with the company’s procedures
– Communicate financial metrics to senior management and investors

Fundraising

– Support the CEO in fundraising efforts, specifically debt and non-dilutive capital

 

Qualifications:

8+ years experience as a Controller or in a similar financial management/accounting role

Ideal candidate has worked for an asset-heavy business with industrial operations such as manufacturing or food & beverage

Advanced degree or accreditation a plus, but not required

Proficiency with accounting software and experience with a software system implementation

Exceptional knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, cost accounting and cost control principles, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

Self-motivated and self-directed

Ability to work closely with key stakeholders and executives

Strong, demonstrated ability to effectively budget and model in a fast-paced, changing environment

Familiarity navigating debt capital, i.e. equipment finance, venture debt, etc. is strongly desired

Excellent written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail

Analytical ability to develop and implement improvements or recommendations
