What is Evolution?

Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the change in the genetic traits of living organisms over time. Over time these changes could result in the creation of new species. The predominant theory of evolution is natural selection, which describes the process that allows people with advantages survive and reproduce more frequently than those with less favorable characteristics. In time, this disparity in reproduction could result in the creation of entirely new species.

The term "evolution" originates from Latin for unrolling or revealing has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has evolved, both in science as well as elsewhere. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather), believed that existing species evolved into new species in a predetermined fashion. The term transmutation was coined by the Lamarck's disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 opposed this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the view that species are evolving into different species in a gradual and predictable way.

Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process in which living things develop characteristics to improve their chances of survival or producing offspring. In time, genetic variation can cause a population develop new physical characteristics or biological functions. Natural selection is the main force behind the most evolutionary changes. However, non-genetic changes such as the growth in muscle mass due to exercise or diet cannot be considered examples of evolution because they are not passed on to future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and thousands of scientific experiments, creationists have seized on the idea that the theory is controversial to claim that it shouldn't be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories over evolution in textbooks for high school. This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary origins for humans and Archaeopteryx which is a feathered dinosaur believed to be the ancestral bird's first ancestor.

Why is Evolution Important to Humanity?

Evolution explains the origins of Earth and all living species. It is also one of the pillars of biology and helps scientists to understand how living things function and develop. Evolution also demonstrates how different species are connected. Scientists study evolution to gain a better understanding of the natural world and to discover useful information including the development of new treatments.

The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that explains more about the universe as the life on earth. It has been rigorously studied and verified for many years. Many people, even some religious leaders, are in favor of the scientific theory. It is important to note that evolutionary biology does not interfere with religions, since the theory deals only with processes, objects, and events in the physical world.

Many religious people have come up with a way of reconciling evolution with their beliefs. For instance certain Christians believe that God created the world through evolution, and that humans share an ancestry with other animals.

It is important for scientists to support the teaching of evolution. Unfortunately, in some countries around the globe the anti-evolution movement is growing. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit teaching evolution. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC), is campaigning for textbooks to include content on the evolution of horses and their ancestral avian species Archaeopteryx.

It is vital to remember, however, that the evidence in support of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from many sources, including fossils, genetics and the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.

The majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. This belief is based on a variety of reasons. Certain scientists study evolution in order to discover practical solutions for example, such as the development of treatments and other treatments, while others are driven by a desire to improve animal and plant species, typically to benefit humans. Some are simply curious, whereas others have a profound religious belief in God and are seeking to know how the universe works.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is God's word and should be taken literally. While Creationists may not all be Christian but they are a majority. Creationists are typically divided into two groups: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.

The most popular kind of creationist is called the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in exactly the way that is described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of six days of creation is literal and that the universe as well as life on Earth were created just recently.

OECs may be less known however their beliefs are just as fierce as the YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is a lie.

Both types of creationism deny that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origins of life on Earth. They claim that evolution is impossible because it requires a miracle, and that the pioneers of modern science shied away from miracles due to fear of losing credibility.

Some creationists are able to accept naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and call their belief "theistic evolution." This is sometimes called "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the original species." The theory says that God creates species from scratch and allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes eventually will result in new species that are similar to the original.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in a single event known as the Great Flood. These creationists believe that the original species were all created simultaneously, and that they grew slowly afterward. They also reject the idea of abiogenesis and argue that the self-replicating creation of organisms from nonliving matter is unattainable.

In general, creationists oppose teaching evolution in schools. This position is supported by a myriad of professional associations, including the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some scientists and educational institutions are however more flexible and allow both creationism and evolution to be included in their curricula.

What is Creationism?

When people think of creationism most often, they think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their textbooks. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, the Archeopteryx. It is now focusing on removing excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution as well.

STR claims to have the support of around 4000 families and individuals. Its goal is to weed out what it believes is the "atheist materialism" that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of the newest biology teachers revealed that around half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The reasons for this are not clear but could be due to religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists across the country.

The KACR has achieved a lot through its lectures and seminars in the past. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them is a textbook on the natural sciences with a creationist viewpoint, which sparked interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught to this day.

On August 6-7 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of several thousand. KACR and its members have given lectures on creation science at major seminaries too. KACR intends to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
